What to do in a car accident in Plano

Hello all!

Today I want to talk about car wrecks in Plano. We ourselves or someone we know has been involved in a car accident at one point or another and in the rush of it all, sometimes we lose sight of what to do, and who to call. If you've been involved in an accident, the first thing you should do is assess the danger of it all in two elements.

Self-eval by your Plano Chiropractor

First, do a quick self-evaluation on yourself... do you feel pain? Are there open wounds? Do you have severe head or neck injuries? If you answered yes to any of those questions, it would be prudent to call 9-1-1. If you answered yes to head or neck injuries, try to limit your movement as much as possible. The second evaluation should be on your environment... is your car driveable? Are you in a hazardous spot ie. the highway or a high-speed limit area? Are there leaking fluids? Try to get yourself to a safe spot such as a parking lot or side road.

Exchanging information should be the next step, after making sure all parties are ok. Try to keep a cool head as being angry will not help the situation. Remember, accidents are indeed just that. You should take pictures of each other's IDs, insurance cards, and vehicles.

You should seek medical attention if you are feeling pain immediately after an accident. Anything over 10 mph impact can jolt the body, so it's important to get checked out. Symptoms can arise later and you can seek help at that time as well, but surely if you feel immediate pain, consider going to an emergency room, either by ambulance if urgent medical attention is needed, or by the transportation of your choice if it's not an emergency.

Preventing Years of Pain After an Accident

I can't tell you how many times over the 11+ years I've been practicing that someone has pain years after an accident that could have been prevented by getting checked out by a chiropractor. If you've been in an accident, even getting a consultation and examination by a chiropractor will make a big difference in checking out long-term health issues that may arise from an accident. Chiropractors look at a patient in a different light than an emergency room. ER settings are done for the most urgent situations (fractures, dislocations, etc.) and are vital to early detection of problems. Chiropractors look at things like alignments, subluxations, muscular changes, etc. which can create long-term problems if left alone.

If you have any questions about accidents, feel free to contact us or your local chiropractor for more details!
