Have you ever had a headache in Plano?

Raise your hand if you've never had a headache in Plano? Yeah, probably not a lot of hands up. Headaches affect even the best of us from time to time. A couple of misconceptions about them could lead to a false diagnosis though, so we'd like to discuss that at this time.

Different headaches could mean different things in Plano

The number one misconception about a headache we hear is this: if I have a severe headache, it's a migraine. This is possible, given the severity of migraine headaches but what you very well may experience is a severe tension headache. Let's discuss the difference in more detail.

Tension headaches are typically coming from the neck region, and can go in the temples of our head, and wrap around the head, almost like a headband. They may feel like a throb but oftentimes are described as tight. It can also create tension in the shoulders, upper back, and jawline. Stress, fatigue, and postural changes in the neck can be linked to tension headaches causes. Statistically, almost 90% of all headaches are tension headaches.

Migraine headaches have a vascular component to them. The classical migraine headache will include symptoms like sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and smell sensitivity, and will possibly be on only one side of your head. The more active we are, the more intense they become, and resting in a dark quiet room usually helps the migraine headache to go away. In some cases, you may see visual disturbances such as waves, dots, lines, etc. Triggers such as food, bright lights and sounds, alcohol, and other environmental or genetic factors may be possible causes of migraine headaches.

We're not limited to these types of headaches as there are many other types but these are the most common. The good news is, that both respond really well to conservative chiropractic care! If we can help you with any of these symptoms, let us know or give us a call for more information!
